Parks, Nature and Virtual Recreation
Some forms of leisure can be completed anywhere (or anywhere with cell signal or wifi!). Other forms require a particular immersive setting for the leisure activity to take place. Hiking to the top of Table Rock overlooking the Linville Gorge in North Carolina can’t be done from your couch – or can it? This chapter will challenge you to consider whether virtual recreation offers similar benefits to in-person recreation. It might not be as straight-forward as you think!
If you’re in class with Nathan this semester, you will be creating a virtual recreation experience with your Adventure Team. As you complete this chapter, please consider the type of experience you want to create and what benefits someone will gain from your NC:State of Recreation experience. Will it be calming, exciting, or will users of your experience learn a new skill? As we shift into the second half of class, you’ll be engaging as a recreation provider, not just a consumer!
