Bacterial cell wall composition. Gram-negative bacteria have an outer lipid bilayer membrane and a thin peptidoglycan cell wall, whereas Gram-positive bacteria have no outer lipid membrane and a thick peptidoglycan cell wall. Initially, both types of bacteria take up the crystal violet stain, but during the destaining process, only Gram-positive bacteria retain the dye. Created with BioRender.com.
