Advancements Since Ted Talk
Hayashi’s recent publications revolve around every part of the production, structure, and genetics of spider silk. All species of spiders are examined. Most research uses a comparison method to examine the differences between two species, seeing how their environment and genetics impact the production of silk. A recent publication in 2023 examined the difference between two orb weaver’s glue proteins, and concluded that the orb weaver from a dryer climate had less ability to absorb moisture than the orb weaver from a humid climate. This research demonstrates that selecting proteins within spider silk can allow for faster mechanisms based on climate [2].
Recent Breakthroughs
New repeat genes have been found within spider silk, allowing for a higher chance to recreate this silk. Larger studies on silk glands and insights on different silk strands. Differences between male and female spider silk has been discovered [3]. This research has been done with no intent to sell as of right now, this information could become valuable as a sustainable option to kevlar and carbon fiber.
Future Perspectives
The future of spider silk is very promising, there are a variety of applications being researched currently. Spider silk being used as a textile is one of the most prominent, the fiber is lightweight, strong, and durable, making it an alternative to traditional kevlar or nylon fibers. Spider silk also has impressive biomedical applications. The fiber is biocompatible due to its low immunogenicity, good biodegradability properties, and extracellular matrix. Applications in the biomedical industry include wound dressings, artificial ligaments, and sutures.
