Using Generative AI: Policy and Guidance

We encourage thoughtful and intentional use of Generative AI to support creativity, reduce technical barriers, and increase efficiency in developing openly-licensed content. In collaboration with the faculty contributing to this first edition, we have established a policy on the use of Generative AI (GenAI) tools. Recognizing that GenAI technology is rapidly evolving, this policy will be regularly reviewed and updated in consultation with our contributing faculty to reflect new developments and best practices.


Policy Overview

  • Faculty may use Generative AI tools to support ideation and brainstorming, such as generating ideas, prompts, or outlines. However, all actual written content included in this book must be composed by the authors themselves without direct text generation or editing by GenAI tools.

  • Faculty are permitted to use GenAI-generated images in their chapters, provided proper attribution is included.

  • All use of Generative AI must comply with NC State’s Office of Information Technology (OIT) List of Approved AI Tools and meet existing standards for open licensing, accessibility, academic accuracy, and originality.

  • Grant recipients are responsible for ensuring their use of AI tools does not infringe on copyright, introduce misinformation, or perpetuate bias.
