About This Book: Voices, Programs, and Practices in the Open

Katya Mueller

This book is a compilation of experiences from faculty who have taken part in the NC State University Libraries’ Open Education initiatives, such as the Alt-Textbook Program, the Open Pedagogy Incubator, or the Open Pedagogy PIT STOP Program. We hope readers of this book are inspired to adopt similar open approaches in their own teaching, drawing upon the experiences and examples provided by faculty.

Contents

Introduction to Open Pedagogy provides an overview of Open Pedagogy, remixed from “Open Pedagogy and Social Justice,” by Rajiv Jhangiani and Robin DeRosa, as well as some contextualizing information about open education initiatives at NC State University Libraries. This includes descriptions of the following programs: The Alt-Textbook Program, the Open Pedagogy Incubator, and the Open Pedagogy PIT STOP Program.

Due to our focus of celebrating and recognizing faculty for the work they have done adopting open practices in their teaching, we decided to organize this book alphabetically by faculty surname. Faculty have been assigned a part to write about their experiences in one of the Libraries’ open education initiatives. As contributors of this book will be coming from across NC State University, we expect each section to have its own tone and writing style, with each section organized slightly differently to the next. Listed below are elements you may find in each faculty part:

  • An “about the author” section
  • Context regarding their course, and the resulting resource, or open approach they adopted
  • Templates and examples of assignments
  • Lessons learned and unexpected challenges they faced

This book also includes a how-to guide for NC State University faculty who will be contributing to this resource. This part has a guide to choosing a proper CC license, a style guide for creating inclusive and accessible content, a video teaching faculty how to use Pressbooks, a final checklist, and more.

Hypothes.is

Hypothes.is is an open annotation tool that allows you to collaboratively annotate and share content on the web; many of the contributors to this Pressbook utilize Hypothes.is in their coursework. We have integrated the Hypothes.is plugin into this resource, and we encourage you, if you haven’t done so already, to create a Hypothes.is account and take part in a larger community of practice of reading and annotating the chapters and content. This is strictly optional, but it is our hope that this resource sparks further conversation around getting started in Open Education initiatives by actively reflecting on faculty instructor experiences.
