Module 2: Introduction to Polymer Microstructure
2.0 Introduction & Study Guide

In this module, we will discuss polymer microstructure and begin discussing structure-property relationships and will learn how structure and microstructure impact crystallinity (and whether or not a polymer can crystallize!), as well as how crystallinity and cross-link density can impact properties.
Read Section 2.1: Polymer Chain Microstructures in Chapter 2: Microstructure and Molecular Weight of the Polymer Science and Engineering eBook (or the equivalent in a print version).
Study Guide for Module 02: Introduction to Polymer Microstructure
By the end of the module, can you do the following?
- Explain the difference between a side group and a branch.
 - Explain the impact of branching on a polymer’s ability to crystallize.
 - Describe how increasing or decreasing a polymer’s percent crystallinity affects the following properties:
- Strength
 - Stiffness
 - Toughness
 - Brittleness
 - Optical clarity
 - Barrier properties
 - Solubility

 - Explain network polymers and the two primary ways they are formed.
 - Explain the impact of cross-linking and the cross-link density on polymer properties.
 - Explain sequence isomerism.
 - Identify stereo-isomerism (tacticity) in vinyl polymers, including atactic, isotactic, and syndiotactic.
 - Explain the impact of tacticity on polymer properties, specifically a polymer’s ability to crystallize.
 - Explain structural isomerism in diene polymers and how that can impact properties.
 - Explain the four primary types of copolymers.
