Module 2: Introduction to Polymer Microstructure

2.0 Introduction & Study Guide

In this module, we will discuss polymer microstructure and begin discussing structure-property relationships and will learn how structure and microstructure impact crystallinity (and whether or not a polymer can crystallize!), as well as how crystallinity and cross-link density can impact properties.

Read Section 2.1: Polymer Chain Microstructures in Chapter 2: Microstructure and Molecular Weight of the Polymer Science and Engineering eBook (or the equivalent in a print version).

Study Guide for Module 02: Introduction to Polymer Microstructure

By the end of the module, can you do the following?

  • Explain the difference between a side group and a branch.
  • Explain the impact of branching on a polymer’s ability to crystallize.
  • Describe how increasing or decreasing a polymer’s percent crystallinity affects the following properties:
    • Strength
    • Stiffness
    • Toughness
    • Brittleness
    • Optical clarity
    • Barrier properties
    • Solubility
  • Explain network polymers and the two primary ways they are formed.
  • Explain the impact of cross-linking and the cross-link density on polymer properties.
  • Explain sequence isomerism.
  • Identify stereo-isomerism (tacticity) in vinyl polymers, including atactic, isotactic, and syndiotactic.
  • Explain the impact of tacticity on polymer properties, specifically a polymer’s ability to crystallize.
  • Explain structural isomerism in diene polymers and how that can impact properties.
  • Explain the four primary types of copolymers.
