Digital illustration of a longleaf pine and pocosin landscape. Running through the forest is a boardwalk, and throughout the landscape are species associated with longleaf pine forest and pocosin ecosystems, including wiregrass, bayberry, red-cockaded woodpeckers, northern bobwhites, venus flytraps, pitcher plants, gopher frogs, milkweed, and monarch butterflies. The bases of many of the trees are burnt, and the ground bears the mark of fire. The rising sun can be seen through the trees and morning haze. The original image has been annotated with square outlines and labels to indicate which illustrated concept represents each chapter.
