Welcome to the first edition of an Open Educational Resource (OER) textbook for HESS 252 Skiing/Snowboarding. HESS 252 is a course offered by the Department of Health and Exercise Studies at North Carolina State University. The mission of the Department of Health and Exercise Studies is to foster an inclusive academic environment in which to educate and inspire students to build and sustain a healthy body and mind for lifelong productivity and well being. All students attending North Carolina State University are required to complete two Health and Exercise Studies courses to meet the university General Education Program (GEP) requirement, of which HESS 252 is one course option.
This textbook is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to be successful in the course. The textbook is outlined as follows:
- Part 1: An introduction to skiing and snowboarding including history, equipment needs, and safety.
- Part 2: The science of skiing and snowboarding including Newton’s Laws and how loading, deflection, force, center of gravity and base of support can be used to control direction and speed.
- Parts 3 and 4: Video instruction on basic through advanced skills for skiing and snowboarding.
- Part 5: Overview of the health- and skill-related components of fitness and exercise training principles.
- Part 6: An overview of exercises to develop the fitness requirements to ski and snowboard safely and effectively.
- Part 7. Exercise training videos to aid development of the fitness requirements needed for participating in skiing or snowboarding including cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular strength and endurance, and flexibility.
- Parts 8 and 9. Detailed mountain and slope information for Appalachian Ski Mountain and Sugar Mountain Resort, both located in western North Carolina.
